Research Proposal
To: Mrs Bond & Miss Welings From: Connor Gibbons & Nathan Clark Date: 20/10/2016 Subject: Research Proposal Proposed Research Topic: The purpose of television idents are to inform the viewer of what channel they are watching. This helps to expand on audience by helping them remember to come back next time. It also aims to inform the audience of what program is coming on next. This can help to keep the audience watching. TV idents also give the viewer a feel of the atmosphere of the channel. The Design of the ident impacts the target audience s sometimes it gives new viewers a feel for the atmosphere of the channel. If the ident does not appeal to the new viewer they may not return to the channel. Different idents appeal to different audiences. For example if an adult audience channel had a ident from a children's channel they would not feel accommodated and may not return to the channel. Dave’s ethos is to air entertaining, bizarre and comedic programmes to humour and entertain their audience, and the purpose of an ident is to capture a channel’s ethos and reflect the beliefs and values of that channel as well as fairly representing what that channel airs and who their target audience is. The design of our ident is extremely important as it impacts greatly on how the target audience perceives the channel and whether they watch it or not, therefore we have to keep to what the target audience would want to see on that channel while still altering the brand, within reason. Purposes: We hope to create a short humourous ident for the TV channel Dave, this will link to the channel as it will match their typical unusual and bizarre style. We want our ident to show a go kart in a car park placed between several cars, this will tie in to Dave’s typical unusual style where they have one object be completely out of place and put their logo on it. We hope to gain experience in the production and use of idents for TV, including better camera work, editing skills and understanding for the theories behind the imagery included in idents. We want our ident to appeal to Dave’s target audience and to keep them watching the channel, we can ensure that our ident matches what the target audience wants to see by ensuring we use themes that they are used to, such as Dave’s bizarre and comedic theme, which is the keystone of their brand. Background Dave’s current idents appeal to their target audience due to their bizarre and comedic imagery, this also matches the channel’s ethos as they believe in airing entertaining and humourous content, this creates their overall brand and identity, which we will have to reflect in our ident, though with minor changes and alterations. Scope: Our fieldwork will take about 2 months to complete, this will include us creating a survey and interviewing people about what they would want to see in our ident. We will interview 10 people to create our target audience sample. The idea development for our ident should take about 3 months and will include our mind maps, storyboards and proposal. The final production, including filming, pitch, editing, drafting and self assessing should take about 2 months. Method: We will use our surveys and interviews to try and answer our research question and identify our target audience. We will also be using online research including the analysis of existing idents to know how to produce our ident and what kind of imagery should be included. Timetable: Prepare proposal by: 20/10/2016 Complete literature review: 24th March Complete fieldwork by: 21st December Complete analysis by: 21st December Give presentation on: 25th May Complete final report by: 28th May Limitations: -Weather: If the weather is unsuitable for us to film, or if it is not correct for the scene (we need the scenery to be sunny). We cannot really get around this unless we change the scenery used for the ident, which is a possibility but isn’t ideal. -People: Our location is a local car park. We will need to remove their number plates and car registrations from the final product, however some people may not like their cars being included, some people may be pulling out of their parking space. Another risk of people is that some people may walk in front of the camera during a shoot. -Permission: If we are unable to get permission to film in the carpark with other peoples cars we will need to find a new location or get permission from users of the car park. -Online information: Since we don’t actually work for Dave, we are limited to using only online information to build our branding idea. Despite this, we have still built a fairly strong image of the channel, their brand and their ethos through our research. Research / Survey group: Our survey group is limited to students and staff inside of RWS, therefore we will have to ensure that our sample is fair. We can do this by asking an even variety of people of different ethnicities and student groups. We will ask people in different year groups and students studying different subjects so we are as fair as possible.
