Single camera is when a music video is filmed using one camera. These types of videos are usually used in very low budget videos as no editor or film crews are needed. Also only 1 camera is needed to film the video hugely decreasing the cost of the production. But in some cases single camera techniques are used for creativity. An example of this is OKGO. OKGO is a band that create all their videos using single camera techniques. They use single take videos to create effect and to be different and creative. They use a camera that is attached to many arms and zip lines to transport it about.
The reason OKGO use single camera techniques is because they are known for it. They started it because they wanted to be different from other bands creating music videos, this was successful as they quickly gained a large fan base, when their videos went viral. The band in more well known for its videos than its music. The other way single camera teqniques are used is with multiple clips that are all filmed with the same camera, this allows for more complex videos as more opportunities are avaidable. But this does make the editing time take alot longer, it will also increase the time it will take for the recording to be done, as multiple takes are required to be recorded. This method will end up costing less money, but the final product will be of higher quality if it is done correct. One negative of single camera techniques using a single take is that if one thing goes wrong during the recording, the whole take will need to be refilmed. This can end up taking more time than multiple cuts. another negative is that the directors are very limmited on what angles and the quality of the final product. As they need it to be one continuous take. OKGO found a way around this by making the camera move around on ziplines and dollys. This makes the final product of similar quality to multiple cut single camera techniques. Tracking shots are very common in single camera videos as the camere must move around to keep the video interesting, if the camera stays still there is a higher chance that the video will be more boring and a lower chance of being popular., with a high chance of someone closing the video. OKGO managed to keep the camera moving by carefully planning out the cameras location using dolly's and zip lines. The actors also had to move the camera around at points, This was carefully planed and was more effort than multiple takes, but the final outcome was of less quality but was more unique. at multiple points in the video the actors could be seen running around in the background. This decreased the quality of the video, but this did not matter as the video was so unique it was the only way to create it in this way. If multi cam had been used the actors locations and transitions would have been cleaner, but the video would have lost its originality and would have ended up worse. There are also other videos by OKGO, there is one where they film the whole thing in one take on a drone. This makes the transitions much better than in this video, and made it look a lot cleaner, and smoother. But the sloppiness of this video is ok as the video is so unique, and is a one of a kind. Single camera music videos are a new idea for low popularity bands to quickly grow their audience with their videos. OKGO is the best example of this as their videos are more popular than their songs. |
