OKGO - This Too Shall Pass This band OKGO is a indie rock band. They make all of their videos using single camera tequniques meaning that only 1 camera is used in a single take. There are no cuts or transitions. The way you can tell this video is in the indie rock genre is the editing techniques. all the characters are wearing average every day clothing, this gives the video a relaxed feeling. The video is a one take camera recording of a rube Goldberg machine. The machine does certain things in time with the beat of the song, for example spoon hitting glasses in time with the beat when the song is muted. This makes the sound non diagetic at this moment. This video was so successful as the video uses single camera techniques in a unique way. The band OKGO uses single camera techniques and films using one cut videos. The video is of a rube gold burg machine starting with a car knocking over dominoes and ending with the band being covered in paint. In the video the sound is a mix of diagetic and non diagetic. the song was added in after but all the talking was recorded at the same time as filming, as there are conversations. The editing in the video is minimal as there are alot of longer takes of the actor walking around, there is a bit of cutting to the beat but as it is not a traditional music video there is not alot as they do not have to follow normal conventions. The video was so successful due to it being the first of its kind. It is one of the first narrative videos, and is purely narrative with no performance. The video is about a dog living like a person. But the video ultimately has no meaning. There is a range of shots in the video to keep it interesting. There are tracking shots mid shots and long shots. But the camera does not need to move a lot in the video due to the audience being entertained by the narrative to the video. Tori Amos - Spark The video is about a woman who has been captured and is trying to escape, her hands are tied and she is blindfolded but she manages to run away and get to a road, she asks for help from 2 women in a car and they drive off, she then gives up and lays in the road. The video is all performance and narrative. Tori Amos is singing while performing the narrative part of the video. The sound in the video is all diagetic and added in after the filming. There is a lot of cutting to the beat and camera angle switching. The editing is mostly cuts but there are some fades. The lighting links to the theme of the song. it is all dark and moody and the song is all about being captured and trying to escape. The video uses a wide range of shots relating to the video. The song is sung thorough the video by the artist tori. She is using her instincts to travel through the forest to escape her kidnapper. There are birds eye shots and crane shots to show where the artist is going and where she has been. The video was ultimately successful due to the meaning. The video was made due to the artist having a miscarriage. She is trying to escape the misery of her miscarriage being her kidnapper. The people in the car were of opposite sex representing the possible outcome of the child. But the child is not helpful and the child wasn't born meaning she was just as helpless after the miscarriage. Hot Chip - I Feel Better Hot Chip is a dance genre band, the video is performance based where the band are signing and dancing on stage. There is an intruder who comes and kills the band members then brings them back looking better than the did before. The sound is a mix of diagetic and non diagetic, most of the song is diagetic but at the points where there is screaming from the fans it is non diegetic. The shots in the video are different. The video follows a video in the pop genre the band playing on stage with a audience. The band are all on the stage performing. The types of shots are to start with are mid shots and long shots of the band on stage. But there are also a range of close ups and extreme close ups. The video was successful due to the effects added to the video. The effects in editing are different from the average video at this time. There are floating faces and lasers edited in to the video. The editing compared to now is not very good but for the time it was great making it worthy of the top 100 NME music videos. Lady Gaga - Telephone The video is very long at 10 mins long. There is a mix of narrative clips with no music and clips with music and acting for the song. The sound is diagetic in the singing clips but non diagetc in the clips with the acting, which is most of the song. The video is more like a short film. The video negatively represents gender as the actors in the video are dressed in minimal clothes creating a male gaze to the video. The video is so successful due to the short film feel to the video and the 2 very popular artists. The artists are wearing oddly fashionable clothes. The shots in the video are mainly mid shots and long shots. There isn't a large variety of shots in the video. Most of them being simple long shots or mid shots. The video also has a lot of dance scenes in it. In most of these scenes the actors are wearing minimal clothing. creating a malge gaze increasing the viewer total. during these dance scenes are where most of the singing takes place, Throuought the rest of the video there is just talking without any singing, making it more like a very small musical than a music video.
