Soap Operas:
Single camera soap operas are often not filmed in order. This is easier if there is not a linear narrative structure. However this adds a lot of time when it comes to editing. This technique allows events to be filmed from different angles but means than the scene needs to be acted again or effects to be produced again. But this does mean lots of angles can be used with our another camera being in the background of one of the shots. This is not typically used in soap operas as it is hard to capture lots of characters/stories all with one camera. The sound of soap operas is recorded at the same time as the video due to it being easier to sync up. The camera angles used are usually mid shots and long shots keeping it simple but there are often tracking shots to keep the video interesting. The lighting used in these types of videos are usually less of a higher quality compared to multi cam. This is due to the budget. The budget of single camera soap operas is usually less due to the quantity of episodes of being released. The misce en scene of single camera soap operas is usually in the same places every episode due to the series being about life on a street. between a group of people. meaning the lighting in these scenes are usually very good due to it being able to be constantly reused. Multi camera soap operas, allows scenes to be captured from lots of different angles at once with our acting it multiple times. This means that special effects, lighting and acting only needs to happen once and cuts down on costs. This makes it easier while editing also because there are lots of angles to chose from making the final cut better quality. An example of this is Coronation Street. This show uses multi camera techniques as frequently it shows multiple angles of actions occurring or different angles of people conversations. Drama: Single camera techniques allow the crew to jump around between shots and allow the characters and lighting to be relocated. This allows shows to be created on a lower budget as only one camera is required to be bought or rented. But increases the filming time as each angle from a scene needs to be filmed separate from the first angle. This type of filming is not usually used in dramas as multiple camera angles are usually used. Meaning multi camera would be a better option. The lighting of dramas are usually quite good due to the locations being constant thorough the episodes. This means the lighting is set up once and usually left in the same places, and only moves small amounts between episodes. The editing techniques usually are minimal. The effects added to the recording are not usually there due to most of the episode being talking rather than action. The episodes are also meant to be realistic. Multi camera techniques allow the editors to jump between different camera locations for a continuous fast paces final cut. This makes the final cut's speed link to whats going on in the scene. For example an argument will continuously be switching camera angles, but in a general conversation the camera will be switching less and will do so in a slower pace. Crime: Single camera crime TV shows are not usually used as lots of camera angles are required for fast paced or high tension scenes. Having to record each angle separately would increase the filming time or break the flow as editors being forces to use minimal camera angles. Crime usually uses both camera techniques. Single camera when there is less action happening, but multi cam is used on action scenes to decrease overall filming time to get more angles at the same time. The lighting of crime shows is usually worse than other shows due to the locations hot swapping around. The lighting used is usually sunlight or is modified in editing. Multi camera techniques are usually used in crime shows as it can show action that is fast paced. When there is a time limit multi camera techniques are always used as it is alot quicker to record than single camera techniuues. An example of multi cmaera in crime is hustle. Science fiction: Single camera in science fiction is common, as there is a set budget for the episode. This budget is often blown on sets and costumes. The remaining budget is not enough to film multi camera, so single camera is used, there are exceptions in this genre as fast paces scenes use multi camera techniques to show danger or tension. An example of this is early episodes of Doctor Who, where usally the budget is used on sets and costumes, but for tense clips multi camera is used and sets and costumes are reduced in quality to have the money. Single camera science fiction is used on lower popular episodes, but more popular series use multi cam, due to budgets. The sound on these films are filmed on the spot but effectsd are added in after and the sound effects are also added in after. The location of science fiction is usually rather good due to most of the budget going in to lkocations or creating locations on green screens. Multi camera tecniques are not used often in science fiction as the budget is blown on sets and costumes. There are exceptions for this, like very big science fiction shows have such a large budget they will not run out if they spend alot on sets and costumes. An example of this would be morden Doctor Who as it is so popular they have a large budget. Sitcom: Single camera sitcoms are common for certian scenes. Some scenes do not require multi camera and if multicamer was used it would not increase the quality of the final product and would be a waste of money. The sound from sitcoms are recorded at the same time as the film to save time. the editing of sitcoms and minimal, but there is sometimes a lot of work as there is frottage from multiple cameras at the same time. The lighting of sitcoms are rather good due to the location being reused a lot. So the lighting is set up at the start and is usually not moved between episodes. The location does not change much between episodes of the series. But somescenes require multi camera. For example multi camera would be used during conversations between 2 characters where the camera needs to constantly switch angles. The only issue with this is not only does the crew need multiple cameras the crew also needs to match the lighting from each angle, to make sure the transitions are smooth. Documentry: Single camera tequniques are used most of the time as there are a wide range of shots all from different locations, meaning having mone camera is more effective and cheap. The one camera would need to be transported around to differne places in the world most of the time. The lighting of documentaries are not very good. As the clips are recorded are filmed in bad conditions in the wildlife. The sound is also added in after with voice overs as they are filmed in a recording studio after. Bu sometimes the sound of the clips are recorded at the same time. The location is constantly changing in the documentaries as the episodes are all in different locations and sometimes in different countrys Multi camera documentaries are not very common. The multi camera documentaries that do exist are uncommon and usally to show action between two annimals, like a fight.
