Todorov's theory of eaqualibriums says that all conventional narratives are structured in five stages. 1. The start is a state of equilibrium (Stability). 2. A disruption of equilibrium by some action. 3. A recognition that there has been a disruption. 4. An attempt to repair the disruption. 5. A reinstatement of the equilibrium. Propp's theory of characters can be applied to many films. Some examples of Typical characters he found were: The Hero- The character that seeks something The Villain- The person who opposes or attempts to stop the Hero. The Donor- The character that may provide a object or knowledge to help the hero. The Dispatcher- The character who sends the hero on his quest. The Helper- The sidekick or the person who helps the Hero thorough. The Princess- This character is usually the reward for the hero at the end of his quest. Her Father- A character who takes credit for the Hero's actions. This theory can sometimes be applied to narrative music videos. Barthes theory of semiotic codes: Semantic code The connotations throughout the film which support the film’s narrative in an unspoken way.
